Ambra Medda has many strings to her stylish bow. Amongst many other things she is co-founder of Design Miami, trustee of the London Design Museum and a member of the museum's curatorial committee. She established Ambra Medda Office in 2010 in order to work on a range of creative projects. I met Ambra through motherhood- we lived on the same street in West London, drawn together by the connection of having two very young children, very close in age. Her beauty and quirky sense of style belie a strength of personality that allows Ambra to be refreshingly candid about the various experiences of being a mother.
At its worst, motherhood can feel like a competitive business but my conversations on the subject with Ambra have always felt refreshing, supportive and collaborative.
As mothers I think we learn a lot from each other, we feel reassured from each other and pick up useful advice constantly. Those connections have been really enriching and completely novel for me.
I’m curious and open so I get guidance from quite a wide range of sources including motherhood gurus Georgina Hood and Ina May Gaskin, from books, fellow mothers, teachers, educators, talks and courses which I have had to rely on quite a bit.
However just observing how another mother deals with a situation on a bus can be just as enlightening and helpful as reading all the books in the world.
I love the mornings when everyone is on full power. I love making breakfast- Papaya with lime for me and specific combinations of Gorilla corn puffs, chopped strawberries, poached eggs and natural yogurt for the girls.
I love listening to the insane things the children say. I love not being able to finish a sentence or even being able to chat with my husband Edward. I find the morning a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions when we are at our best as a family.Ambra : MALACHITE SILK PJS £249
Greta and Rosa are so incredibly different both in their looks and in their characters. I have to relate to them quite differently and find myself having to switch back and forth. Essentially you’re the same person with equal love but with a slightly tweaked psychology and presentation.
Rosa is smart and very sensitive and requires things to be calm and in a particular pattern; Greta is gorgeous and full of life and couldn’t care less about the order in which things happen. Their experience of the world is so vastly different that you have to respond to their needs differently. That’s not always easy when you’re trying to leave the house in the morning...
I try my best to listen and observe my children who I am still trying to understand as they evolve daily.
I love working and have always valued my professional life. I kept working throughout both pregnancies, however I have slowed down considerably since having kids. The lack of sleep stopped me in my tracks. I don’t think I could have functioned at full capacity until quite recently.
Also I wanted to be able to hold back a little and enjoy these early years as they fly by so fast.Ambra : MALACHITE SILK PJS £249
